One of the best types of toys to get for small children would be those that allow them to be creative, and have fun at the same time.
Two of these toys would be Legos and Mega Bloks.
Now at first it might seem like these two toy brands are one in the same, but are they really?
Let’s do a comparison and you can decide for yourself which one would be best to get for your kid.
Overall product comparison
Lego is so good because they have the rights to a lot of popular themes.
This allows them to appeal to a larger share of the market.
Some of the themes they have the rights to would include Star Ways, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Super Hero’s as well as Pirates of the Caribbean.
Lego has the Duplo range for children that are smaller. There are other Lego products that really make it hard to choose Megablok instead.
Lego has minifigures on a Batman and a Spiderman theme.
Now Mega Bloks also have some themed products they offer in order to draw in children.
You can find Megabloks with a Power Rangers Theme, Hello Kitty, Halo, Moshi Monsters, Starcraft and World of Warcraft.
Children who are just starting out with Mega Bloks also can get the range they offer that is made for first time builders.
This is going to help them gain the skills and confidence to move on to more complex versions.
Price comparison
If you want to get a basic tub of Megabloks that is about 500 pieces, then it is going to cost you about $27.00 on the company’s official website.
A tub of about 480 “Bricks and More” Lego bricks will cost you about $30.00. In some cases the price you pay is going to depend on where you buy them and when you buy them.
Which brand is used more often by older kids?
Believe it or not there are actually several competitions that are built around Legos, particular using the Lego robotic sets.
Some of these would include Botball, which is a national U.S middle and high school competition.
You also have the FIRST Lego League for kids ages 9-14.
There are a lot of places where competitions are held that are less formal.
It would be very tough to find information about competitions of a similar nature centered around Megabloks.
Which product has the richer history?
How many of us did not own at least one set of Legos growing up?
Chances are most of us are aware of what they are and how any variations they come in.
Not many of us have really heard of Megabloks though.
Plus the company that makes Legos has been around for much longer and they invest more into advertising.
Issues between the two companies that make Legos and Megabloks
Lego has been to court against Megabloks several times, because they claim that Megabloks uses a “studs and tubes” interlocking brick system that violates the trademarks Lego has.
The patent Legos has for this system has since expired.
So which one of these is better to get for your kids?
Lego brand has a rich history and it seems like your kids would have so many more choices as to what they can do because of the varieties available.
Megabloks do not seem as popular, but there are a lot of kids that will appreciate the size.
If I had to give my honest opinion on which one of these is better I would say Legos.
Just to be on the safe side though, it would not hurt to have a set of each type.
